The Science of Movement - Redefining Stability

Developmental kinesiology is the study of how human movement patterns and posture develop from infancy and how these movement patterns shape the way we move our bodies, stabilise and breathe for the rest of our lives.

It is the development that babies undergo to learn to control their bodies. They do so by going through predictable stages, such as:

  • lying on their backs and stomachs

  • rolling

  • crawling

  • sitting

  • standing

  • walking

This development of human movement is driven by INBORN AUTOMATIC PROGRAMMES, with the ultimate goal being the achievement of optimal posture. It is not a learnt skill! It is automatic and will stay like that for the rest of a person's life.

DNS is the clinical and training application of developmental kinesiology. DNS uses positions and principles taken directly from infant development to understand and retrain adult movement:

  • restore proper breathing mechanics

  • improve trunk stability

  • optimise joint loading

  • improve movement efficiency in sport and daily life

A simple analogy

Think of it as the instruction manual for how the human body was designed to move. If movement is the house, developmental kinesiology is the foundation plan. If you want a solid stable house, you need to ensure a stable foundation.

A strong house needs a stable foundation
A strong house needs a stable foundation

The development of movement patterns during early childhood largely determines the foundation of our posture. In turn, posture largely infuences the quality of human movement throughout life.

All sport movement should be based on optimal posture.

It determines:

  • Range of Motion (ROM),

  • maximum strength and speed,

  • stability,

  • easy of movement, protection of passive strucures throughout the muscules, tendons, ligaments, joints, etc..

If our automatic, foundational movement patterns and our posture are compromised, no learnt skill or technique can be optimal. Performance suffers, and the body compensates, resulting in tension and pain.

DNS addresses the issues at the very root of the problem by aiming to restore the fundamental movement patterns and postures at a subcortical, subconscious level.

The Result

Correct movement, posture and stabilization happens automatically, without thinking, so that you can concentrate on other sport or task specific challenges.
